BEAUFORT, S.C. – A discharged hospital patient stole an ambulance from Beaufort Memorial, the Island Packet reports.

Beaufort Police Department officials said a New York City man discharged from Beaufort Memorial Hospital drove out of the hospital in a stolen ambulance Monday night.

Personal Care Service owns the ambulance and informed Beaufort and Jasper County dispatches to track the vehicle using GPS, officials said.

A Jasper County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull over the stolen ambulance on I-95, but the man did not stop. Police finally ended the chase in Hardeeville by deploying spike strips.

The driver of the stolen vehicle is currently at the Jasper County Detention Center on a charge of failure to stop for blue lights. Once he leaves the detention center he will face charges of grand larceny.

The 39-year-old former patient’s name is not listed.

If convicted of grand larceny, the man faces up to 10 years in prison.
