Flying tire kills one and injures three on I-20

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. – A flying tire from a two-car crash killed one person and left three others injured, the State reports.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened when an unknown vehicle traveling west on I-20 lost a tire. The loose tire crossed the median and smashed into a 2006 Toyota Corolla heading in the other direction, killing the passenger.

Master Trooper David Jones said the crash happened at about 1 a.m. near mile marker 67, close to the Broad River Road exit in Columbia.

According to Jones, after the debris smashed into the Toyota, the vehicle crashed into the median barrier.

Officials took the driver and two back seat passengers to the hospital with minor injuries. Their current status is unclear at this time.

Officials said the vehicle that lost its tire continued heading east, and had not been identified at the time the article went to press.
