4 Life-Saving Safety Technologies on New Vehicles
December 7, 2016 – Paul Hammack

Unfortunately, even the latest safety innovations cannot prevent all collisions. If you were injured by a drunk, distracted or negligent driver in South Carolina, turn to Hammack Law Firm for legal advice before you speak with the insurance company.
Many modern vehicles are equipped with safety features that appear to be science fiction. These four technologies, in particular, are preventing accidents and saving lives:
- Adaptive headlights;
- Forward collision systems (FCS);
- Lane departure warning (LDW) systems; and
- Lane departure prevention (LDP) systems.
Let’s take a closer look at four safety technologies you should look for in your next vehicle:
1. Adaptive Headlights
Adaptive headlights automatically adjust their intensity and direction to the driver’s steering to improve visibility on hills, turns and curves. According to the American Automobile Association, adaptive headlights could theoretically provide a safety benefit in 90 percent of all nighttime accidents. In addition to helping the driver notice hazards in the road earlier, adaptive headlights increase the visibility of pedestrians and reduce glare for other motorists because they point toward the road.
2. Forward Collision Systems
Forward collision systems were created to counteract the most common cause of motor-vehicle accidents: driver errors. FCS use sensors to identify an imminent crash. The system then alerts the driver with a physical, audible or visual cue. The most advanced FCS actually take control of vehicles and engage the brakes to reduce the impact of accidents. This technology could eventually eradicate most rear-end collisions.
According to Consumer Reports, at least 10 auto manufacturers have committed to making this technology standard. Data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows that FCS could reduce insurance injury claims by up to 35 percent.
3. Lane Departure Warning Systems
Lane departure warning systems alert drivers when they begin to drift too close to the edges of a lane. According to the AAA, LDW systems could reduce fatalities in lane departure-related head-on collisions by up to 46 percent.
4. Lane Departure Prevention Systems
This technology takes the LDW system a step further by taking over the vehicle when a driver begins to drift into another lane. LDP systems actually re-center the car to prevent head-on and side-swipe accidents.
According to INFINITI, the LDP system uses a camera to calculate the distance between the vehicle and lane markings. It is programed to engage the brakes selectively to correct the car’s trajectory.
Although these four technologies have revolutionized automotive safety, they cannot prevent all accidents and injuries. If you were hurt by a negligent driver in South Carolina, you may be entitled to compensation.
